Megan began creating with resin about six years ago. She started small, with tumblers and other small projects, experimenting with different colors and techniques, creating unique and eye-catching designs. But as time went on, she began to see the work of other artists who were taking resin art to a whole new level.
One day, Megan came across some resin art pieces that featured preserved flowers. They were absolutely stunning. The flowers, encased in the resin, looked as fresh and vibrant as the day they were picked. She was captivated by the idea of being able to preserve the beauty of flowers in such a unique and lasting way.
Determined to learn this new technique, she embarked on a journey of discovery. She researched different methods and experimented with various approaches until she found the perfect formula for preserving flowers in resin. It wasn't always easy—she had her fair share of failed attempts and sticky situations—but with each mistake, she learned something new.
Fast forward to today, and she can proudly say that she can now create custom resin art pieces for weddings and other special events. She works closely with couples to create one-of-a-kind pieces that capture the essence of their love and the beauty of their wedding flowers.
Whether it's a bouquet preserved in a pendant, a centerpiece adorned with delicate petals, or a set of coasters featuring pressed flowers, each piece is a labor of love. She pours her heart and soul into every creation, ensuring that it is not only visually stunning but also a cherished keepsake that will last a lifetime.
Now, you might be wondering where all this magic happens. Well, let me tell you—She has a loft in her husband's shed. Yes, you heard that right. Her husband, being the supportive and creative soul that he is, built a loft in his shed for her to work in. It's her own little slice of heaven, where she can let her creativity run wild and create resin art pieces that bring joy to others.
Having their own separate spaces allows them to pursue their passions without getting in each other's way. It's a win-win situation, really. He gets his shed, and she gets her loft. And together, they create a harmonious balance of creativity and craftsmanship.
You can now find Megan's creations on the first floor of Ugly Glass & Co.

I am fortunate to live in the country - next door to my oldest daughter and grandchildren. Five dogs and an occasional foster pup or two along with lots of spoiled chickens hang out with me and the kids! I love traveling but most times you will find me outside in the garden and hanging with the grandchildren and the pups when I’m not creating. Now that fall is upon us, I’m looking forward to a more creative time!
I am grateful for Jenny’s faith in me as a teacher at Ugly Glass & Co.! ]]>Have you ever wondered what it takes to start a small biz? Well, let me introduce you to MLG Creations! This quirky little business, founded in 2022, is the brainchild of a talented and creative individual; Christy Goble.
Unleashing Vintage Magic at UG & Co.
At UG & Co., MLG Creations specializes in handcrafted, upcycled vintage home décor and handmade accessories. From charming crocheted purses to cozy pillows and everything in between, MLG's creations are a delightful blend of nostalgia and modern style. Each piece is lovingly made with a sprinkle of magic and a dash of whimsy.
What's the Secret Ingredient?
Now, you may be wondering, what's Christy’s favorite thing to make and sell at UG & Co.? Well, hold onto your hats (and accessories), because it's crocheted purses (you should see the strawberry purses!), pillows, accessories, hats, and basically anything else you can think of! MLG's creativity knows no bounds, and their crochet skills are off the charts.
The Joy of Creating and Spreading Happiness
Having your own small business is like having a secret superpower. When I asked Christy what they love most about it, they said, "I receive a great amount of happiness when others find joy in the things I create. I am often surprised that other people like the things I make." It's a beautiful feeling when your passion brings smiles to people's faces.
From Nurse to Creative Extraordinaire
Believe it or not, Christy’s journey to becoming a small business owner started from a completely different path. For over 25 years, she worked as a nurse, dedicating her time and energy to caring for others. Two years ago, she left a demanding position and opted for a part position that allows her to pursue her creativity and all the other things.
Christy is a proud parent of three amazing children. And then there's the “beautiful dog”. LOL. This furry bundle of joy is like another child to her! I bet she spoils him with so much love, treats, and belly rubs. We all know how it is!
Oh, and let’s not forget the husband! She has been happily married for 20 years! He puts up with all of her creating and plant propagation; she has developed quite the green thumb in the last 5 years! From what I hear, she’s lost count now, but at last count, it was over 50! He is a keeper!
So, next time you're in need of a touch of vintage charm or a whimsical accessory, look no further than MLG Creations at UG & Co. on the Lower Level. Their handcrafted treasures will transport you to a world of joy and nostalgia. Remember, life is too short for ordinary accessories!

]]>Her name might be familiar as she was with Ugly Glass & Co. several years ago when she upcycled and reimagined furniture. There’s a chance that you even bought a re-purposed oil can pendant light or home décor from Deanna in the past. But like many of us, life got busy, she had to step away from this creative pursuit. Nevertheless, her desire to create never truly faded.
“A couple of years ago, I found myself drawn to experimenting with natural elements such as concrete, cotton cord, and air-dry clay. I became captivated by the notion of taking something raw or simple and uncovering its inherent beauty.”
“Compiling all these elements, I made the decision to secure a booth once again at Ugly Glass & Co. in March of 2022, and I must say, I'm absolutely loving it! This creative space allows me to showcase my unique creations and connect with fellow artists and enthusiasts who appreciate the beauty of handmade pieces.”
Ugly Glass & Co. provides a platform for artists like Deanna to share their passion and craftsmanship with the public in person. There is something about touching, and feeling the product that you just don’t get from shopping online. It's a place where raw materials are transformed into objects of beauty, where creativity flourishes, and where the art of upcycling finds its home.
We asked Deanna what her favorite thing to make was and she said: “This question is a little difficult to answer. I suppose my favorite thing to make would be my macramé chandeliers. They take a LOT of time but I love seeing them transform and sparkle in the light. But in general, I like learning and trying new things. I love mixing up my booth with something new I’ve created.”
How does Deanna spend most days? “I am fortunate enough to have worked for a great company for the last 20+ years. I spend my work days calculating all the numbers and reporting on them. So, my small business is my creative outlet. A chance to put the facts and figures aside and let my imagination have free rein. “
“Having a small business is a lot more work than you’d imagine. So much goes on behind the scenes that folks don’t think about. It’s truly a labor of love. The reward is the excitement of seeing something I made (big or small) finding its place with someone else.” I agree with you, Deanna, I love watching someone purchase a new treasure for their home that was handmade by one of our vendors, that is why I do this!
If you're looking to add a touch of originality to your living space or simply appreciate the art of repurposing, I invite you to visit Ugly Glass & Co. and explore the incredible world of upcycled creations. Prepare to be inspired! You may also find that you have to have one of those Macrame Chandeliers!
You will find Deanna's booth on the first floor of Ugly Glass & Co. in the West Bottoms of Kansas City, MO.

Therese's story is an inspiration to moms and small business owners everywhere. She proves that it is possible to pursue your passions, take care of your family, and run a small business all at the same time.
Like many of us, over the years she has worn many hats on top of wife and mother of 3; from Marketing to Operations and has 20+ years in Cosmetics. Most recently she led a team at KC Custom Hardwoods; the complete opposite of the cosmetics industry.
Therese’s small business, NE Tee, makes tees of course but also jewelry, hats, and bags. I asked Therese what her favorite thing was to make, and she said “My favorite thing is coming up with new ideas and concepts of what will sell and what will be a hit. I enjoy the fun; make you laugh out loud shirts and patches.”
In between track meets and football games; she somehow finds time to go hunting; hunting down clothing and accessories to be “reloved” and sold at an affordable price through her other small business; Reloved Fashion. Most of Therese’s finds are for sale for under $10. Making her Reloved Fashion Booth a very affordable option for those on a budget and a need for business casual attire.
Therese's favorite thing about owning a small business is the flexibility and creative freedom it provides. She cherishes the opportunity to connect with other artists and makers, and she is grateful to be a part of the talented community in Kansas City. Therese's small business journey has been a testament to the power of pursuing one's passion and embracing the entrepreneurial spirit.
So, the next time you find yourself doubting whether you can have it all, think of Therese. Remember her story and let it serve as a reminder that with the right mindset and a little bit of hard work, you too can achieve your dreams and own your own small business.

]]>In 2015, Rubia Rojo was born. “A Funny story: we weren’t even trying to start a business. A few years ago, I was shopping for a baby gift for a friend who is a Kansas City native and having a "KC" themed baby shower. I was less than impressed with the options available and was venting to my brother about my lack of success in finding something acceptable. We had both spent some time back in our college days working at a local screen-printing shop and agreed that things would be so much easier if we could create and produce our own designs. A few drinks and Craigslist searches later, we purchased a 30-year-old, 4-color manual printing press which would find a new home in my basement.”
Around that time, Whitey was the art director for a corporate event planning agency. She designed and planned things from the Super Bowl to the Sundance Film Festival and The Masters. When COVID-19 brought the corporate event world to a grinding halt, it gave Whitney the nudge she needed to launch Northern Pine Design. A design firm to help small businesses create branding and marketing materials.
Rubia Rojo is mostly screen-printed goods, Tee shirts, sweatshirts, and tea towels. She also creates a few new products each season. “This year, we have added wrapping paper and are looking into producing some stickers that will be ready to launch when we put out our holiday items.”
“I like creating products with a funny or sarcastic twist to them. Things that make people smile or laugh when they see them.”
I asked Whitney what she liked most about owning her own small business and she said, “Having the freedom to create whatever makes me happy, as opposed to following the guidelines set by a client, which is what I do in my day job.”
Make sure you check out Whitney's booth on the first floor at Ugly Glass & Co.

]]>When I decided to embark on this new creative venture in 2018, I carefully considered the type of products I wanted to make. After much contemplation, I chose to specialize in crafting wood signs. Why, you may ask? Well, one of the main reasons was the ease of shipping compared to furniture. Wood signs are compact and lightweight, making them a perfect choice for online sales and shipping. Twenty years ago, I ran a business where we hand-crafted primitive-style furniture and restored antiques. It was a fulfilling endeavor, but as you can imagine, much harder to ship and be a mobile business at pop-up events.
In June 2019, I made the decision to join forces with the team at Ugly Glass & Co. as a local seller. Working alongside Jenny, Skip, and other talented vendors has been an incredible experience. The sense of camaraderie and support within the community is truly inspiring.
At Ugly Glass & Co., I now offer a range of products including my wood signs, shirts, and tumblers. The opportunity to showcase my creations and witness the delight on customers' faces is immensely gratifying. It's also a joy to interact with customers during First Friday Weekends.; held year-round on the first full weekend of each month.
One of the most rewarding aspects of running a small business is the freedom it provides. As an entrepreneur, I have the liberty to create whatever I like. This artistic autonomy allows me to explore my creativity to the fullest and bring unique designs to life.
Whether it's a rustic farmhouse sign, a whimsical tumbler, or a trendy shirt, I pour my heart and soul into each creation. The ability to share my passion with others and make a living from it is truly a dream come true.
So, if you're seeking a touch of creativity to adorn your home or a special gift for a loved one, I invite you to explore the world of Pickadilly Garden. Discover the beauty of handcrafted wood signs and other delightful creations that will add a personal touch to your life. I am happy to be expanding my booth on the lower level. You will be able to find my goods straight ahead as you come down the stairs.

]]>"People don't realize how long it takes to design and sew a quilt; it truly is a labor of love. Aside from the cost of the materials it could take 40 hours to complete a small lap quilt. That is why quilts cost upward of $300." Judy explained.
On a whim in September of 2020, Judy started her business J. Lin Designs when she came to Ugly Glass & Co., she set up two different sections in her booth at UG & Co.
One area is for things she has collected for over 40 years. The other section is for things she has hand made & embroidered.
Judy likes to collect shoes, purses, and fabric.
"I don't need any more shoes or purses but you can never have too much fabric. I see the fabric and am immediately designing something in my mind and must purchase it. (And then some!) My two favorite items to design are wool jackets and quilts."
"I like having my business at UG & Co. because Jenny and Skip teach you a lot about having a business and are always willing to give some advice. I get excited when someone buys something I have made and hope that it brings them as much happiness as it did for me to create."
"I do dabble in the auction market where I purchase some small furniture items. I have gone to a few antique stores and picked up things to sell. People like to give me things they think I can sell instead of donating to a charity store."
Judy spent many years as a union organizer and then by public speaking for United Way, that is how our paths first crossed. From the first time I saw Judy walk into my store, I knew I knew her from someplace. We both had worked with United Way around the same time. It was inevitable that our paths would cross again.
"As I retired having a booth with a creative & collectibles business has been a good pastime. I can continue to sew and make a little money doing it.", she says.
J. Lin Designs offers a remarkable collection of textiles that seamlessly blend vintage charm with modern style. With her commitment to quality, comfort, and creativity, J. Lin Designs is the perfect choice for those seeking to elevate their home decor or give a unique gift.
